Islamabad May Get a 27-Member Elected Assembly

A high-level committee has proposed a new governance framework for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), including a 27-member elected assembly, its own chief executive and 27 administrative departments.

Under the proposed plan:
🔹 21 members would be directly elected
🔹 5 seats would be reserved for women
🔹 1 seat would be reserved for minorities
🔹 Health, education, environment and municipal services would come under the territory’s government
🔹 Law and order and master planning would remain under the federal government

The proposed ICT government would have administrative and financial autonomy. The framework would be introduced through an Act of Parliament after approval by the federal cabinet and both houses of Parliament.
