WhatsApp Could Allow Calls Without an Account

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new guest calling feature that could allow people to join voice or video calls without creating a WhatsApp account or installing the app. The feature was reported by WABetaInfo on September 7, 2026, and is currently under development, meaning it is not yet available for public or beta testing.

The development could make WhatsApp calling much more accessible to people who do not regularly use the Meta-owned messaging platform. Instead of asking someone to download WhatsApp and register an account, a user could create a call link and share it with the person they want to speak to.

The recipient would then be able to open the link in a web browser and request access to the call as a guest.

How WhatsApp Guest Calls Could Work

According to WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp user would be able to generate a call link through the Calls tab. The host could select the type of call and then copy and share the link with another person.

If the recipient does not have a WhatsApp account, they could open the shared link in a browser and access the calling interface through WhatsApp Web rather than downloading the application or signing up. However, guest access would not be automatic.

WhatsApp reportedly plans to require the host to manually approve every guest who attempts to enter without an account. The approval requirement is designed to give hosts greater control because an unregistered guest cannot be identified through a normal WhatsApp profile.

This would be an important difference from some existing call-link settings, where approval can be optional for registered users.

How Is It Different From Current WhatsApp Call Links

WhatsApp already allows users to create links for voice and video calls. However, WhatsApp’s official Help Center currently states that people joining through those links need a WhatsApp account.

The reported guest-calling feature would therefore represent a significant expansion of the existing system.

A person could potentially receive a secure WhatsApp call invitation and join from a browser without registering for the service. This could be especially useful when communicating with clients, customers, relatives or other people who do not normally use WhatsApp.

Will WhatsApp Guest Calls Be End-to-End Encrypted

Security is expected to remain an important part of the upcoming feature.

WABetaInfo reports that guest calls would continue to use end-to-end encryption, similar to regular WhatsApp calls. When a guest opens a call link, WhatsApp Web can create a unique identifier for the browser session, which can then be used in the process of generating an encryption key for the call.

This means the proposed guest system is being designed so that joining without a permanent WhatsApp account does not necessarily remove the encryption protections associated with normal WhatsApp communication.

The technology follows WhatsApp’s broader move toward guest access. The platform has also introduced guest chats, allowing invited people without WhatsApp accounts to participate in limited browser-based conversations.

Why the New WhatsApp Feature Matters

Guest calling could make WhatsApp more useful for businesses, freelancers, customer-support teams and organizations that frequently communicate with people outside the platform.

For example, a company could potentially share a WhatsApp call link with a customer who does not have the app. Instead of installing WhatsApp just for one meeting, the customer could open the link in a browser, request access and join the conversation.

It could also help with international communication, temporary meetings and one-time calls.

The mandatory approval system may provide an additional layer of protection if a link is accidentally forwarded to someone else. Hosts would still need to be careful about sharing invitation links and should verify guests before approving them.

When Will WhatsApp Launch Guest Calls

There is currently no confirmed public release date for WhatsApp guest calls.

WABetaInfo says the feature remains under development and is not yet available for testing. WhatsApp has also not publicly confirmed a specific rollout date.

Until the feature is officially released, existing WhatsApp call links continue to operate under the platform’s current requirements.

If guest calls eventually roll out widely, the update could mark an important change for WhatsApp by allowing people outside its registered user base to participate in secure browser-based calls without installing the app or creating an account.
