Rain & Thunderstorms Expected In Punjab In Next 24 Hours

Rain and thunderstorms are expected in several districts of Punjab during the next 24 hours, according to the latest weather outlook issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The forecast indicates that Lahore and several other cities may experience rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, while most other parts of the country are likely to remain dry. The latest update, issued on September 28, indicates that isolated to scattered rainfall activity may affect northern and eastern Punjab, with changing weather conditions expected in different areas.

Lahore Among Cities Expected to Receive Rain

Lahore is among the cities included in the latest rainfall forecast. Other districts where rain and thunderstorms are expected include Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. The forecast also covers Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Vehari and Toba Tek Singh.

Residents may experience cloudy conditions, rainfall and gusty winds during the forecast period. However, rainfall intensity may vary from one district to another. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department's Flood Forecasting Division bulletin issued on September 28, rainfall was recorded in several locations during the preceding 24 hours.

Attock received 55 millimetres of rainfall, while Faisalabad Airport recorded 24 millimetres. Rainfall was also reported in Chakwal, Jhelum, Sargodha, Joharabad and other locations. These observations indicate that rainfall activity has already affected different parts of Punjab and surrounding regions.

What Is Causing the Rain?

The meteorological department has identified a shallow westerly wave over the upper parts of the country, while weak moist currents from the Arabian Sea are entering central and upper regions. These atmospheric conditions are supporting isolated to scattered rain and thunderstorm activity.

The PMD has also noted that monsoon activity has significantly weakened across Pakistan, with atmospheric conditions becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the monsoon. As a result, rainfall is not expected uniformly across the province, and many areas may continue experiencing mainly dry weather.

Weather Outlook for the Next 48 Hours

The official forecast suggests that mainly dry weather is expected across most parts of Pakistan during the following 48 hours. However, isolated rainfall and thunderstorms may continue in selected northern areas. For the weekly outlook covering September 29 to October 5, the department has indicated that no significant weather activity is expected, although a weak westerly system may affect northern parts of the country between October 1 and October 2.

Citizens in areas expecting thunderstorms are advised to take basic precautions, particularly during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during intense thunderstorms, stay away from electric poles and exposed wiring, and avoid standing beneath trees during strong winds. Motorists should drive carefully on wet roads and remain alert to water accumulation in low-lying areas. People living in areas vulnerable to urban flooding should monitor official weather updates and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
