Punjab Board 9 Class Results 2026: Around 72% of Govt School Boys Fail Under Lahore Board

Government Schools Record Lower Success Rate

One of the most significant findings from the Lahore Board results was the difference between government and private institutions.

Among regular students enrolled in government institutions, 101,079 candidates appeared and 40,409 passed, giving government institutions a pass rate of approximately 39.98%. In comparison, private affiliated institutions recorded a much stronger 70.92% pass rate, with 56,157 of 79,185 candidates passing their examinations.

The figures highlight a considerable performance gap between the two education sectors and may lead to further discussion about teaching quality, academic monitoring, student attendance and learning support in government schools.

The gender-wise performance within government institutions was particularly notable. Reports based on Lahore Board statistics showed that the pass rate among government-school boys was approximately 28.86%, meaning roughly seven out of every ten boys failed to clear the examination.

The failure rate has consequently been reported as around 72%. Government-school girls performed significantly better, with a pass percentage of approximately 48.13%, although more than half of female candidates also remained unsuccessful.

When all regular and private candidates are combined, female students also performed considerably better than male candidates. A total of 150,882 female candidates appeared, of whom 82,410 passed, producing a success rate of 54.62%.

Among male candidates, 129,794 appeared and 48,133 passed, resulting in a pass percentage of only 37.08%.

Science Students Perform Better Than Arts Students

The results also revealed considerable differences between academic groups. According to the Lahore Board result statistics, 203,844 Science Group candidates appeared, with 111,802 passing. 

The Science Group recorded a 54.85% pass rate. The Humanities or Arts Group showed a much weaker performance. Only 16,228 of 70,761 candidates passed, resulting in a success rate of approximately 22.93%.

 The Technical Group recorded a pass percentage of 41.39%, with 2,513 successful candidates out of 6,071 who appeared.

Results Raise Questions About Education Performance

The Class 9 results are likely to increase attention on the challenges facing government schools, particularly the low performance of male students.

However, the 72% figure should not be interpreted as the failure rate of government-school boys across the whole of Punjab. It specifically relates to government institution students covered by BISE Lahore, which includes Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. Results and pass percentages differ across Punjab’s other education boards.

For example, Multan Board reported an overall Class 9 pass percentage of 52.11%, demonstrating that performance varied between boards.

The latest results underline the need for closer attention to students who are struggling academically, particularly in government institutions. Teacher support, regular assessments, attendance monitoring, improved learning resources and targeted assistance for weaker students could play an important role in improving future examination performance.
