Meta Now Lets AI Agents Set Up WhatsApp Business for You

Meta is making it significantly easier for developers and businesses to set up WhatsApp Business messaging by allowing compatible AI agents to handle many of the technical steps that previously required moving between several Meta tools.

The company announced the new capability on September 15, 2026. It is powered by a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server, which connects AI coding agents directly with the WhatsApp Business Platform. This means developers can describe what they want to accomplish in natural language and let an AI agent assist with the setup and configuration process. 

Setting up WhatsApp Business messaging traditionally involves several separate tools. Developers may need to work with Meta's Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation and their own coding environment. With the new system, much of that workflow can be handled through an AI coding agent.

Meta's WhatsApp Business Tools MCP uses the Model Context Protocol, commonly known as MCP, to allow AI agents to interact with WhatsApp Business tools in a structured way. TechCrunch reports that compatible agents can include tools such as Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT. 

Instead of manually navigating each technical step, a developer could ask the AI agent to configure WhatsApp Business messaging and guide it through the required tasks. The new system goes beyond simply explaining WhatsApp's documentation.

According to details reported about the rollout, AI agents can help create a WhatsApp Business account, add and verify a phone number and register the number for access to Meta's Cloud API. They can also check requirements such as Terms of Service status during configuration. Businesses and developers can also ask an AI agent to create messaging templates based on a description or modify existing templates.

Another useful capability involves testing. The agents can help test messages and webhooks while monitoring potential configuration problems. This could make it easier to identify issues involving payment methods, business verification or Terms of Service requirements that might otherwise cause a WhatsApp Business integration to fail. 

WhatsApp has become an important communication platform for companies handling customer support, product inquiries, sales leads and other business conversations.

Meta said earlier this year that more than one million businesses were already using Meta Business Agent across WhatsApp and Messenger. The company also said more than one billion active business conversation threads take place every day across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. 

Reducing the technical work required to configure WhatsApp Business could therefore make automated messaging easier for developers and businesses to deploy.

The latest update is particularly important for developers who previously had to switch repeatedly between documentation, dashboards and coding tools while troubleshooting their WhatsApp integration. It is important to distinguish the new developer feature from Meta Business Agent.
